Accessing carer support and how to get an assessment
If you provide unpaid care for someone who is frail, elderly, has a disability, health condition or illness, it’s important that you also take time-out to look after your own wellbeing.
This will ensure you continue to have the strength and energy to perform your caring role.
Unfortunately, it is a well-known fact that many of South Australia’s 245,000 unpaid carers don’t seek out the many supports that are available to them, with one of the main reasons being that they don’t know where to look.
This is a key driver behind a new model introduced by the Federal Government – the Carer Gateway – to make it easier for carers to navigate and find assistance.
The Carer Gateway
Carer Gateway Support Services are a range of new supports for unpaid carers, implemented by the Australian Government to improve the health and wellbeing of carers in Australia.
Carers SA is the main Carer Gateway Service Provider across South Australia, including in Adelaide and country South Australia.
But before you can access these supports you need to register with us and undertake an assessment, so we can ensure we support you in the best way possible.
To register for support services with Carers SA, contact us to arrange an assessment with one of our trained, kind and helpful Carer Support Planners.
In order to assess your needs and make an action plan that’s right for you, we use an assessment tool called the Carers StarTM.
The Carers StarTM tool allows us to work in collaboration with you, to create a plan that will most benefit your caring role.
Your Carers StarTM assessment will involve a one-on-one conversation with one of our trained Carer Support Planners, who will work through a series of questions with you to help highlight your strengths and identify any gaps in your support.
We understand that this might sound daunting, but we are here to help and want to ensure you get the best from us and the carer support system.
Following your assessment, you will receive your Carers StarTM and a comprehensive action plan with agreed goals, referrals for services, and actions.
