Caring for an
Older Person

Are you caring for an elderly friend or relative?

Our population is ageing rapidly, and many people look after older or frail family members. Most people don’t think about their aged care needs until an unexpected event or health problem occurs. If this happens, it can be a confusing and emotional time, for everyone involved. If you find yourself in this situation, Carers SA can help you.

Do you need some time to yourself?

It’s okay to admit that you need a break or help in your caring role. Or, that you need help with an emergency situation. Our staff understand what you are going through and can help you to evaluate your situation and put you in touch with the local services and supports that best meet your needs and requirements, including respite.

Are you looking for someone to talk to?

Our friendly, knowledgeable team are on hand to help you work through the emotions and challenges carers face everyday. They can provide advice, support and information specific to your situation. Get Advice.

Caring can be rewarding, but sometimes the stresses and demands of caring can bring up difficult emotions. Our Counselling program can help you explore ways to deal with difficult situations and to balance caring with the rest of your life.
Would you prefer to meet face to face with staff or other carers in your situation to share tips on how to make being a carer easier, or get information on local services, in a relaxed, social environment?

We offer Carer Support in a wide range of forms, such as activity groups, support sessions, social outings, retreats and educational workshops. Individual local support can also be provided over the phone or by making a time to meet with one of our friendly staff.

Use our resources

We can help you access a wide range of aged care services. For example, do you need support to fund adjustments to your home, or are you considering residential care for the person you are caring for? We can help you to navigate My Aged Care, the aged care system which supports Australians over 65 years of age.
