Celebrating the 2.7 million unpaid family and friend carers in Australia.
Sunday October 13 marks the beginning of National Carers Week, a time to acknowledge, recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers who support a loved one with a disability, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail.
Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our national economy. Should all carers decide to stop performing their caring role, it would cost the country $60.3 billion per year to replace those supports – that’s over $1 billion per week.
David Militz, Carers SA CEO, says ‘If carers were not there to provide this support, the impact on the various sectors, such as aged care, disability, health, mental health would be enormous. Carers are vital and National Carers Week provides a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge these very important people.’
While many carers experience a number of positive outcomes associated with caring for a loved one, caring does not come without its challenges. Research shows that carers are among the least financially resourced and most disadvantaged groups in society, with two-thirds of carers requiring health and wellbeing support.
“The demands of a caring role often mean that carers aren’t as free to participate in society as their peers who do not have caring responsibilities” said Carers SA CEO, David Militz, “This can lead to loneliness and a sense of isolation.”
Anyone at any time can become a carer and National Carers Week is an opportunity to raise community awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring roles. National Carers Week also provides you with a chance to show your appreciation and learn about carers and caring in Australia.
Carers SA will be celebrating National Carers Week from 13 – 19 October with a number of events throughout the state. To find out more, or attend one of these free events, please visit https://www.carerssa.com.au/news-events/
