Caring for
someone with
a disability

Are you caring for a friend or family member who has a disability?

The needs of people living with a disability are diverse, and we understand that every situation is different. Getting the right help can mean an improved quality of life for the person you are caring for, and support for you.

If you are caring for someone with a disability, Carers SA has programs available to you.

Are you looking for someone to talk to?

Our friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you work through the emotions and challenges carers face everyday. We can provide advice, support and information specific to your situation.

Would you prefer to meet face to face with other people in your situation, in a relaxed, social environment? In our Carer Support Groups we offer activity groups, support sessions, social outings, retreats and educational workshops where staff, volunteers and carers can share their stories, provide tips on how to make caring easier, or information on local services.

Caring can be rewarding, but sometimes the stresses and demands of being a carer can bring up complex emotions. If you want to speak to someone about your situation, in confidence, our Counselling program can help you.

  • Do you need respite?

Having a break can be good for you and the person you care for, or necessary in an emergency. We can help you to evaluate your situation and put you in touch with the local services and supports that best meet your needs, including respite.

    Consider Respite
  • Financial Impact

The financial implications of a long term caring role can be serious. You may be entitled to help with the growing costs of caring. We can provide you with information about caring, working and financial assistance.

  • Taking care of you

We understand that you can’t take care of anyone else unless you take care of yourself. Our resources provide information about identifying your own needs, and taking steps to meet them.

NDIS Information

The NDIS is a new system providing support and services to people with significant and permanent disability. To access the NDIS, the person you care for must be under the age of 65, and once eligibility is confirmed, this NDIS support will continue throughout their life.

Carers SA staff can help you to navigate the NDIS system with our information, workshops and resources.
