Short-term care when something stops you caring

Emergency Respite supports Carers who are experiencing an urgent or unplanned event that temporarily impacts their ability to continue their caring role for their family or friend.

This is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week service.

If someone is in danger, injured or extremely unwell, call 000.

Call 1800 422 737 to access Emergency Respite.

You do not need to have registered with us beforehand. We will take some brief details and start arranging support straight away.

Have this ready if you can:

  • Your name and phone number
  • Who you care for, and what support they need each day
  • Any medicines or medical conditions
  • Anyone else who should be contacted
  • Any current service providers supporting the person you care for, in case we already work with them
  • Your emergency care plan, if you have one, and anything else you think might help

If you do not have all of this to hand, please call anyway.

Planning Ahead – Emergency Care Plan

Emergencies can happen at any time, and it is worth planning ahead. An emergency care plan makes it easy for someone to take over from you if you are suddenly unable to provide care. Find out more by visiting the Carer Gateway website.
