You Might Not Call Yourself a Carer
Across many cultures, looking after family is simply part of family life. Supporting a parent, partner, child, relative or friend may be seen as something you just do, rather than as being a Carer.
Because of this, some people from multicultural communities may not realise that they are a Carer or that free support is available to them.
Whatever your culture, language or background, you have the right to access support with your caring role.
What Is Available?
Carers SA services are free. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis or a Carer Payment or Carer Allowance to access support.
Support can include counselling, peer support with other Carers, one-to-one support with your caring role, planned and Emergency Respite when you need a break or when something unexpected happens, in-home support, and Tailored Support Packages which can pay for practical things that make caring easier.
If you would prefer to communicate in a language other than English, Carers SA can arrange an interpreter to help you understand and access the support available.
Supporting Multicultural Carers
Carers SA understands that culture, language and family traditions can shape how people experience caring and how comfortable they feel asking for support.
We want multicultural Carers to feel welcomed, understood and respected when connecting with Carers SA. Our focus is on understanding you, your family and your caring situation, and helping you find support that works for you.
We work in partnership with multicultural organisations that have strong connections with the communities they serve. Through our partnerships with the Multicultural Communities Council of SA (MCCSA) and the Australian Refugee Association, we help Carers learn about Carer Gateway and connect with support in culturally appropriate ways.
We also work closely with Chinese Welfare Services of SA, Jewish Community Services and German Community Services to raise awareness of Carer support and connect with Carers in their communities.
By working with organisations that communities already know and trust, we aim to make it easier for multicultural Carers across South Australia to find and access the support available to them.
